Our Story of Success:
Ours is a proverbial rags to riches story of a young man who worked hard on his dream to become a radio journalist, yet ended up building his own media empire from literal scratch.
Sheer guts, high optimism, and a full load of prayers are what brought us to where we are now, said Elmer V. Catulpos, who at 29 years old, started to build in 2005 what could now be the Philippines’ largest marketing media firm – Brigada Group of Companies.
Brigada, with headquarters in General Santos City in southern Philippines, is a conglomeration of 12 companies, spearheaded by the Brigada Mass Media Corp., a network of state-of-the-art FM radio stations spread across the Philippines.
Brigada also runs its own television station in General Santos which broadcast is carried via cable stations in key Mindanao cities. It also has daily vernacular tabloid printed in four editions with an immensely wide readership base and is declared as “The Official Number One Regional Newspaper in Mindanao” by media research firm, Nielsen.
The growth of Brigada hardly came unnoticed in a place where many local media companies usually become docile in their journalistic role, tending to be largely dependent on ad revenues from multi-national firms and politicians.
Seeing the consequences faced by many media companies that at times compromise journalistic independence for much needed revenues, Brigada invested in establishing Brigada Healthline Corp., a products and services business which serves as the financial backbone of Brigada, thus, giving the company’s media outfits the desired journalistic independence.
Brigada traces its strong foundation as a company to the millions of people whom it has served with its emphatic service and dependable brands of health supplements, medicines and cosmetics.
As it grows, Brigada now employs a thousand personnel who, incidentally, are among the well-paid workers in the country. Aside from the ample fringe benefits they get, Brigada personnel also undergo trainings and lectures to keep them abreast with the fast-changing technology and work environment.
From a 1,000-peso capital investment that started Brigada in 2005, the company has grown tremendously and is now eyeing to build 100 radio stations, 50 TV Stations and 500 pharmacies cum grocery stores across the country within few years from now.
